Winter Time & Humidity in Nova Scotia

Okay, plant lovers, let me tell you, my house is packed. I'm talking a full-on jungle vibe with around 60 different plants. String of hearts, monsteras (including a prized Thai Constellation!), Florida ghosts, ravens… you name it, I probably have it (or want it!). It's my happy place.

But living in Nova Scotia definitely comes with its challenges, especially for my plant babies. It feels like it's always raining or snowing here, which you'd think would make things humid. Nope! It's surprisingly dry. Like, my skin is constantly begging for lotion dry. So, I can only imagine what my tropical plants are going through.

Everyone says, "Get a humidifier!" And I get it. It's probably the best solution. But honestly? My wallet and my electronics are already crying uncle. I'm a little worried about the long-term cost of running one, plus I don't want to risk any damage to my gadgets.

So, I've gone a different route. I've become a leaf-misting maniac! Just like in the summer when I'm battling dust (which, let's be real, is a year-round thing here), I've started gently spraying my plants' leaves. It seems to give them a little boost.

The biggest thing I've learned is to be super mindful of the soil moisture. Because it's so dry, I'm watering way more often than I used to. It can be a bit of a juggling act, figuring out the perfect watering schedule for each individual plant. It's definitely more work, since they all have different needs, but honestly? I love the extra time I get to spend with them. They're my little green buddies!

And, speaking of extra love, spring is just around the corner, which means re-potting time! I'm planning on giving almost all of my plants a fresh start with some new soil and a little more room to grow. Fingers crossed, it'll help them thrive even more in this sometimes-dry climate.

So, that's my current plant strategy. It's definitely a work in progress, and I'm always learning. If you have any tips for keeping plants happy in a dry climate without a humidifier, please share! I'd love to hear them. We're all in this together, right?
